Do Not Repay Evil with Evil

“Release your anger, release your pain, and give it completely to God“ - Wesleyne

Romans 12:19 to 21:

Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

In these verses, Paul addresses the Roman believers, urging them to resist the natural human inclination towards vengeance. Drawing from Old Testament principles, he reminds them that vengeance belongs to God alone. Instead of seeking retaliation, believers are called to a higher standard: to respond to their enemies with kindness and generosity. The imagery of "heaping burning coals on his head" is not a call to inflict pain, but rather an ancient Egyptian metaphor suggesting that such acts of kindness might lead the enemy to feel shame and remorse, prompting a change of heart.

Today, you will learn the transformative power of love and kindness. Paul emphasizes that the appropriate response to evil is not to reciprocate with more evil, but to counteract it with good. This approach not only prevents the cycle of revenge but also has the potential to change the hearts of those who oppose us. The verses challenge the conventional wisdom of "an eye for an eye" and instead promote a radical love that seeks the well-being of even one's enemies. It's a call to rise above our base instincts and to reflect the love and grace that God shows to all of humanity. In doing so, we become agents of change, turning potential cycles of harm into opportunities for healing and reconciliation.
